MARCH 2019.

NEW YORK, NY

/Respire// was created to evoke deep reflection, a type of peace and tranquility that can only be found when surrounded by nature.

Inspired by the richness of the black beaches of far-away Iceland, the sounds of crashing waves, and the morning mist, we simultaneously explore how our world is continuing to become more digital. Our hope is that this digital and physical simulation of a natural world — although still in a confined box — would lead to a still and solitary moment in the middle of New York’s concrete jungle.

Exhibited at the Grand Opening of Showfields Mall.

our creative process:

What does it take to dye 2,500 lbs. of sand jet black?

We thought we had an ingenious idea when we decided to rent a commercial concrete mixer from Home Depot but turns out, it was actually easier to mix everything by hand.

So yes, we dyed every particle of sand black with gallons of paint dye — and a ton of art strength.

Between the building’s delayed construction and the dismal rainfall, this process alone took days. But without this kind of labor of love, this particular project wouldn’t have been as special.
